My heart is whole again!

WOW! What a tremendous outpouring of love and support for Apache. Thank you so much!

Since my last post about Apache, Tucson Cold Wet Noses has pulled Apache and we have raised (and are still raising) enough money to get one ACL surgery. We're still raising money to get his second and much needed ACL surgery.

This poor boy is in so much pain he can barely walk.

This is Apache from May 21 of this year. You can see his cast in the background.

I am so happy that he is with his friend, Shari. I know Shari from Sick Bay. She and I do Wednesdays and I'm pretty sure she loves Apache more than anyone. She would drive all the way from Catalina just to spend time with him.

Thank you Shari!
Thank you Tucson Cold Wet Noses!
Thank you Tucson for your support!

My heart was broken twice today. Seriously

and it was all before noon.

I was at PACC taking photos of Santa and adopted pups and cats for their Christmas in July event.

I was in between clients when I received an email from PACC. It seems my dear friend, Apache, has made it to the 72 hour list.

The vet thinks he was hit by a car before he was brought in. No one claimed him so the vet tried fixing his back leg and he wore a cast for quite a long time.

This beautiful 4 year old neutered heeler and chow mix is so housebroken that even with a broken leg, he would give a little bark to anyone walking by to let us know he had to go out and relieve himself.

Those kind of dogs are a rarity at PACC. He is special to everyone there. He is so gentle, calm and sweet and has eyes that just look right through you.

Unfortunately, his injuries haven't gotten better. I don't know all the exact terms but I do know it's a surgery that PACC is not equipped for.

So, he is now on a 72 hour hold and will be put to sleep if a rescue doesn't step forward and help him. His surgery will probably be in the range of several thousand dollars.

This was the first time my heart broke today.

After getting the email, I thought I would bring Apache out front to see Santa and get some fresh air. It's not any fun being stuck in sick bay with no people to look at or to give you attention either.

So, I got permission to bring him out front. I thought the exposure would be good for him and he'd like the attention from customers.

Kat got some towels for him to sit on and filled up a bowl with water.

We got him hooked up with Santa right away!

The very first family that came up said, "Oh, look at him! He's pretty! What's his name?"

I said, "It's Apache." He's a very good boy but he needs surgery for his back legs and hips."

"OH!", the woman exclaimed, "DON'T TOUCH HIM!!! THAT'S A $5,000 DOG!"

I couldn't believe it. I knew she thought she was being funny but I didn't think she was at all so I said, "Oh, actually, he would probably love a little pat on the head from you. It would be good for him."

Apache started to hobble over to the woman.

The woman actually took a step back, put her hand on her chest and said again, "Oh NO! I could never! That's a $5,000 dog and I won't even start to touch him!" and then she gathered the rest of her family around her and marched into the adoption area for I guess a "free and healthier dog".

On her way into the adoption area, I could still hear her telling strangers not to touch "that dog. That dog was for sure a $5,000 dog".

Apache just wanted a pet on his head and this woman, thinking she was funny, wouldn't touch him.

I looked down at Apache and he looked back up at me with those eyes and that is when my heart broke for the 2nd time today.

What do you think Apache wished for when he visited Santa? I know what he wished for. He wants to be whole again and have a family that loves him that he can love back.

Some days at PACC are just harder than others and today was again one of those hard ones. Even with all the happy families coming out with their new family members and posing for Santa, my heart was still heavy for Apache.

Thanks for reading and listening to me vent.

Welcome to Hell - 2 hours at PACC intake

The Help Desk was set up to help give people other options to find homes for their "unwanted" pets. The shelter is past capacity with over 1000 animals right now.

I'm not naming names here. I just need to vent.

Here's a picture of silly dog outtake to help take the edge off....

It's something I've really wanted to do. I signed up and took the training. I love it but at the same time, it's not easy. It's not easy in the least bit.

I hear the same excuses for dumping animals:

I'm moving
I can't give him/her enough time
I can't afford his/her medical treatment
They don't mesh with the other animals.

Today was really hard for me and I've had a difficult time putting my finger on exactly why.

I guess it didn't start out the best...

There was an old boxer and the man had come in to euthanize him. He didn't have a leash on him but I soon discovered he didn't need one. The dog just pulled itself along with it's front legs as its back legs were useless. The back legs were covered in friction burns from being drug and the flies were just sitting on top of the wounds. He wouldn't keep the dog still and it kept moving around to one customer to another to another almost looking like he was begging for help. Soon he would collapse from exhaustion. A few minutes later, the dog was up again doing his rounds.

How long had the dog been doing this?
About a month.
Have you taken him to a vet?
No. He's 10. I want him euthanized. They aren't supposed to live much longer than that anyway.

One lady returned a puppy. She told me that the puppy was sick, was getting better but she just couldn't take care of him anymore. She had taken the dog to a vet and he had given her antibiotics. The dog wouldn't take the antibiotics so she took all of the pills, crushed them up and mixed them up in two ziplock bags of dry dog food. I asked her how she knew that the dog was getting the correct amount of antibiotics each day and she stated, "Well as long as he eats all the food, he will get them all and be fine". I knew there was no sense in correcting her and felt honestly that she was too stupid (sorry, not professional) to own a dog.

Later while driving home, my mother told me that the same woman told her the reason she was returning the dog was because she was going on vacation and had no one to watch him. She was not willing to give us any time to find a new home for the puppy.

A couple came in with two small terriers. They didn't "mesh" with their current dogs. They were both from ex's. Neither my mom or I could get a straight story out of them. The woman said that she does rescue so she knows what "all of this is about". She laughed and laughed and spoke in broken sentences. Thinking back on it, I bet they were high on something. We could never figure out their relationship and if the dogs were living together or not. The whole thing was really odd. They got tired of waiting and the man she came with decided he would give us a few days to look for a home for his dog. We started getting his information to follow up and then the woman talked him out of it!!!

Another man brought in a lactating German shepherd. He had found the poor thing a few days ago. Every time one of us walked over to her, she would poop. He couldn't keep her because he'd have to lock her up in his garage during the day. I gently suggested that is what is going to happen to her here. He then said his garage wasn't air conditioned. He didn't want any assistance, either.

A man and his infant son came in with a cat he found. The son was allergic to the cat and it was so hot and humid during the wait. I felt bad for the kid so I let them go in ahead of the couple with the terriers. As soon as I did that, the guy with the terriers came in to see why the infant got to go ahead of him, I guess. When he saw me, he turned back around and went outside.

After we clocked out, my mom and I walked around for a few minutes looking for a dog I wanted to show her. When we left, the couple with the terriers had pushed their way in anyway and the guy with the infant was still sitting in the corner. I asked if he was being helped and he said "no" and pointed to the couple.

There was a military guy that didn't want our help either. He sat there for a long time and then he got up and left with this dogs. I thought he was going to take the dogs out to pee or something but he never came back. Maybe he changed his mind. I don't know.

And this doesn't include the poor man that held his 15 year old beautiful and blind dachshund on his lap waiting for his turn for euthanasia.  He cherished this dog and had him for so long. All around him were these people "getting rid of" their dogs and cats for stupid reasons.

Not fun. I don't know when I'm going back. We did divert three animals from entering in the shelter so I guess that is something.

Taking a weekend off

I feel weird not going into the animal shelter but I need a break. I guess now that I think about it, I am going there tomorrow for cat training. For some reason that feels a little different for me.

I finished up a layout I had on my desk for months and then started and completed another. It's been a long time since I have done pages just for myself. I thank My Creative Scrapbook for giving me a position on their design team. It's really given me the kick in the pants that I have needed.

This one came together in less than 10 minutes. The longest part was waiting for the gesso background to dry.

The background book pages are from The Book Thief. I was reading it until Shannon the dog shredded it. I threw away most of the book and just kept a few of the torn pages. I knew it would come in handy one of these days. And yeah, this is another example of how I have difficulty throwing crap away.

There is just something about October Afternoon that makes it all so easy! Everything just fell into place. The flowers are old Sassafras that were sitting right next to my work space. They just fit in there perfectly.

This one is also October Afternoon plus some Tim Holtz, Basic Grey and Crate. This is my son and his great grandfather both around the same age, 10 years. The picture of my son is already 3 years old!

I think I finished this one months and months ago. I couldn't decide if I liked it. After I splashed the page with red ink, it reminded me of blood and I didn't like it. But, after staring at it for months, I decided I'd just stick with the blood theme since after all the page is about jousting! :P

I believe the papers are WRMemory Keepers. Don't ask me what anything else is, please. It's been so long! There is a page ripped from the dictionary.

Thanks for looking!

URGENT request for Chutney!

This is a final and URGENT request for Chutney. She is a beautiful 4 year old Border Collie/Husky mix that was rescued two years ago from PACC.

Chutney is a fabulous dog! She is very loyal and very smart. She loves to cuddle, play ball, chase, ride in the car with her head sticking the window, and frolic around in mud puddles. She is very good on the leash and knows basic commands like sit, down, stand and shake. All she wants to do is please her family.

Chutney likes to stick her head out the window and feel the breeze in her fur and the bugs on her teeth.
I’ve been walking Chutney every morning for the past month. I know all of these things to be true. I pick her up every morning at the kennel and she’s so happy to see me! She actually has a smile on her face.

I get her in the car and I have to roll down the window so she can stick her head out and get a smell of the morning breeze. Once we turn the corner and head for the park, she paws at me until I give her my hand. She will very gently place her hand in mine and keep it there while we get to the park.

If Chutney doesn't have her head sticking out the window when we are driving, then she is holding my hand. Seriously, she paws at me until she gets my hand and then she just holds it there.

When we go to the dog park (we make sure it’s empty first), I start to take off her leash and say, “Ready, Set…” and I take the leash off her neck and say, “GO!” and she takes off running around the field like it’s Disneyland for dogs.

Disneyland for Dogs

I throw the ball for her and she likes to pretend she’s tired. I’ll start to walk out to get the ball and before I know it, she’s running past me and getting the ball before I can. Then she runs back towards me with the ball in her mouth and plops herself down in the mud puddle (if there is one) behind me. We play this game every morning.

She is so happy running around in the grass with a ball in her mouth.

Chutney also has some issues that even I have witnessed.

She has had 4 homes in the last two years. She has spent the last 4 months living in a boarding kennel. Chutney gets extremely protective of her special person and reacts negatively if not distracted.

She is also very dog selective and needs a home without any other dogs. TCWN is also requesting that she not go to a home with small children.

Chutney needs a home where her owner can be consistent in training her and help her overcome her resource guarding.

She has been to sol.dog for training and has a collar that can be used to help distract her when she becomes fixated on guarding. Sol.dog is also offering training of the collar for the person that fosters or adopts Chutney.

Chutney has been to my home and tolerates one of my larger dogs. She does not like my other three so I cannot bring her to my home.

Chutney at the end. She's tolerating my larger heeler mix after I told her she had no choice. She decided later that she didn't like my chihuhua/jack russel mix. You can see I kept a leash on her to keep better control over her.

She does do well in a crate. I’ll tell her, “Go to your crate” and she’ll climb right in and get comfy.

She gets along great with everyone that I have introduced her to. My 10 year old daughter and 13 year old son come with me to the dog park and they play with her as well.

Chutney with my daughter, Kat.

Chutney with my parents.

Chutney with my son, Trent.

When I brought Chutney home, I had her on the bed with me. She did growl at my husband when he walked into the room but she quickly stopped when I told her, “NO!” in a stern tone.

TCWN has been rescuing dogs for 9 years. They have rescued 3,000 dogs and take on the ones with the medical issues and some of the serious behavioral concerns like Chutney.

However, Chutney has become a case that is difficult to crack without someone dedicated to her. We need help.

Besides the thousands of dollars spent on training and boarding, living in a kennel is no life for a dog. Because of this, Chutney can only stay in boarding until the end of July.

This has been Chutney's home for the last 4 months.

Chutney deserves more than that. She needs to have her own home that can help her blossom into the dog that I, and everyone at TCWN, know she can become.

Please share this post. Even if you think you can't do anything, you can help by just sharing. Someone out there needs her and she really needs someone out there. :) Thank you.

Chutney is in Tucson, AZ. You can contact TCWN at 520-235-6309.

I bet you know who this is....it's Chutney!

As Tucson enters July, we're way above the 100 degree mark. We're praying for rain and we stay inside all day. I guess we would do the same thing during some sort of apocalyptic event.

The kids are bored. Thank goodness for the internet.

Thanks for looking and visiting. :)

Being in the right place at the right time

So after I walked Harry, I brought him back to discover that after bottle feeding and helping kittens poop, Kat was assisting the vet.

That's her hand right there in the front. She was holding a tube of what they told her was "sleepy mist".

I guess the little gal had either been hit by a car or was in a bad fight. She was not in good shape. Two techs were holding the dog down, Dr. Jen was working on the dog and Kat was in charge of keeping the "sleepy mist" right at the dog's nose.

Harry, a sweet dog suffering from severe Valley Fever.
Trent and I had just dropped off Harry and we needed to leave to help set up the Help Desk, a new program at intake.

I told Kat that when she was done to meet us at intake.

I found out later from Kat that the dog actually died right there on the table while they were working on her. Kat also explained to me that the vet had told her the dog was still moving after death because of her reflexes.

I asked Kat if she was upset about that and she said, "Well, I feel bad for the dog but the vet was trying to help her. Now she's not in pain so it's OK."

I was shocked. Absolutely shocked that she was as calm and cool as she was.

She then proceeded to tell me that Dr. Jen had patted the little pup after she had died and Kat noticed that dust flew out of her fur when she did that.

I'll repeat what I said above:

I was shocked. Absolutely shocked that she was as calm and cool as she was.

Later I asked the shelter manager about what happened (as he was in the room, too) and he said that everyone was kind of holding their breath to see how Kat would react with the dog dying and even they were surprised with her reaction.

Wow! I knew she wanted to be a vet when she grew up but I can't help but be impressed that at the age of 10, she is OK with what she had just witnessed and that she felt good about trying to help this dog.

She's going to be a great vet.

As an after thought, Kat even told me that wiping the kittens' behinds to make them poop and pee really wasn't all that bad, either.

The price of water bottles

I've been pricing water bottles lately because mine keep disappearing.

First, the selection of water bottles is overwhelming. You have glass ones, plastic ones with straws, plastic with snap off lids, plastic with twist on lids, they come with hooks to hang on our belt, they come with a plastic insert to flavor your water with lemons or strawberries. Some are dishwasher safe, some are not. Some can't go in the freezer. Some don't even have an opening large enough to add ice.

The list goes on and on.

But that's not the worst part. Why the heck would I spend $15.00 on a stupid plastic water bottle that holds 12 ounces just so I can hook it onto my belt? I haven't seen a water bottle under $10 for years.

And 12 ounces is nothing. By the time I walked back to the bedroom to watch TV with my water bottle, it would be empty and I'd have to get up and go refill it again and again.

I gave up and just started carrying around a cup of water and hanging on to it in the car when I drove around corners.

Having an open glass of water in this house isn't a swell idea, either. If the cat isn't sneaking drinks of my ice water, then the dogs are knocking them over.

Running with a cup of water wasn't working so I went back to my old bicycle water bottles. I spend 10 minutes every time trying each lid to see if it fits. Why don't they just make the same freakin' size lid?

An open cup of water at the animal shelter wasn't going to work, either. I need a lid because when those hoses start spraying, poop and pee can float around in the air and land in my water. I know it happens and don't try to tell me it doesn't.

I needed something BIG, something with a lid and something I could thrown in the dishwasher.

I was at the gas station and found this baby:

It's huge! It's like 7,000 ounces and it lasts me all day long. Kat is holding it so you can see how big that sucker is. It's bigger than her head and upper body. And the best part....it was $6.99 and it came with a free fill of Diet Dr. Pepper.

I took it to pre-school today and all the kids made fun of me. But, because I'm an adult, I just let it roll off my back. I just sipped on my Diet Dr. Pepper and watched while they waited in line at the drinking faucet.

Yeah, my score of the day. Go me!

Just try drinking out of this, stupid cat!

Maybe you should mind your own business, or

the not so glamorous life of being a volunteer at PACC.

So, I walk sick dogs on Wednesdays. I like it because the dogs live in Hell in the sick bay room and I get to take them into an outdoor dust bowl and play with them for a little while.

They usually appreciate it. The puppies above hate everyone. I kind of don't blame them, though. Their mother was very, very aggressive and was put to sleep. They were slotted for euthanasia as well but someone came to their rescue and now all the sick bay volunteers are trying to help socialize them.

In just the last week, they have come a long way! The black one will take treats out of my hand and the little tan one doesn't show her sharp, white teeth as much.

But, this isn't about the puppies. This isn't really about Harley, pictured below.

Yeah, her skin is peeling off and no one really knows why. The dog doesn't even know. She doesn't seem to be in any pain.

Per the vet, she's being tested for MRSA, but it could just be a thermal burn.

I know this because when I screamed in horror, slipped on the wet concrete and found myself face down in dog piss, dirty towels and bleach water the vet was standing over me to make sure I was OK. I quickly explained that the dog looked like this before I came to see her and that's when she told me they are testing her for MRSA and there should have been a note on the kennel to not walk her.

I was really only worried about the dog and my camera. Both of which were fine.

Unfortunately, when I fell I put my right hand out to catch my fall and in turn hurt my wrist.

After dealing with puppies that hate people, slipping, falling and then finding out that this dog may have MRSA, I decided to call it a day.

I took today off from volunteering and did laundry. My wrist was still a little sore but I didn't pay too much attention to it until 6:00 hit and it was time for wine.

I pulled the wine bottle out from the fridge and was absolutely mortified to discover that I had to use two hands to pour. My wrist hurt enough that I couldn't pour a glass of wine!!!

I guess wearing dog piss, blood, poop, bleach or that maybe I'm a card carrying member of MRSA is really not that big of a deal anymore. But when it comes to pouring my wine, I'm a little pissy about it.

When I started to complain about it, Kat says, "Well, maybe you shouldn't have anymore wine!"

and that's when I said, "Maybe you should mind your own business."

I can't wait to get back to PACC tomorrow!

Hi Heather - an email from my grandmother and my response (pic heavy)

Just checking in a bit later than usual. Nothing exciting to report from here. It's time to go play laser tag with Kiki. Bet you don't have anything that interesting to do. Hi.

Have a good one.

Love, GB

My response which I added to because I totally forgot about the "pretty snapper" and the fire alarm:

Hi Grandma,

Here's my day...

We were asked if we wanted to walk dogs from the vet's clinic. We were honored for the opportunity and happy to help!

The first dog came with strict instructions. She had just had surgery to remove some cancerous masses. I was told, "If she starts bleeding a lot, bring her back." We had to bring her back.

I think her name was Darla. Very, very sweet dog!

Kat carried a dog that had just been spayed. She was loose in the clinic but as soon as we put a leash on her, she was all, "I'm not going anywhere" and had to be carried.

ChiChi

Then we were told another dog could only be carried. We could put him down to do his business, but that was all. Why? Because his pelvis was broken. When I put him down to pee, all he did was wiggle around and try to jump on me. I picked him back up right away because I was terrified he was going to hurt himself more.

When I held him, all he could do was give me kisses. He was one of the sweetest and happiest dogs I've met at PACC.
Beans
We walked a dog that had a broken snout and were warned not to let it pick up anything from the ground. We were told to go slow because she like to run. Oh, boy! She was all over the place and the walk was cut a little short because I was worried she would hurt herself more.

Then we played with a puppy that had been hit by a car. His name was, "401" because that was the exit or something where they had found him. He pooped and then drug the leash through the poop. I renamed him to Mr. Poopers but the techs didn't like that much.

Mr. Poopers, errr..I mean 401.
We patted on a puppy's ribcage because it had pneumonia and we wanted to help it clean out it's lungs.

Then we hung out with a dog that had just been neutered and had an open wound on it's leg but it had been stitched up. Somehow while we were with the dog, it opened up its stitches and we had to bring him back, too.

We also played with a dog that had just had his leg amputated and was stapled all back together. The wound looked really, really fresh, but he didn't seem to mind. He was already sitting and trying to get into my lap to cuddle and kiss my face.

Cheerios says, "4 legs are overrated!"

Customers broke up a dog fight and I pulled out a bleeding dog from the kennel. I delivered him to the vet directly to get checked out. It was just a small amount of blood but I felt he still needed to be checked out. Sorry, no picture.

Kat and I asked permission to move Franki to another kennel up front with another chihuahua, Marco. She was having socialization issues and I thought Marco would help her relax and give her tips on kissing and lap sitting. We had her in the kennel for 3 minutes and then the fire alarm went off. Kat grabbed Marco and I grabbed Franki and we headed to the nearest exit (as we were instructed to).

Franki
On our way out, we were told that it was OK to stay where we were. False alarm. We put the chis back in the kennel and watched them for a few minutes. Checking again on them later, Franki actually came to the front of the kennel for treats. She used to stay as far back in the kennel as possible. Score for us!

We took a picture of a beautiful chihuahua we had seen on PACC's intake photos. She was beautiful in her intake photo and I wanted to try and capture her photo before she was adopted/rescued because then the picture falls off Petharbor never to be seen again. Her name is Sammi:

Here's the description of her that I gave someone else:

I tried to take another picture of her today before the chi rescue got there. I didn't pull her out of her kennel because she did not appreciate my artistic vision and showed me her teeth. This was all I got and it's blurry.
By the way, her teeth were pretty, too! Shiny and white!

I took a picture of a pit bull whose head was covered in scabs from what looked like bites. Look at the poor guy's ears. Chopped off with scissors probably.

I yelled at two kids because they were trying to climb on top of the kennels. Sorry, no pictures.

We played ball with a dog that's last day might be today. I think we wore him out because he flopped into his bed when we took him back to his kennel. I'd like to think he had a happy day.

Bandit is a happy boy. He got a walk from a volunteer today, he got to hang out with Matt West in the office for a bit, he got to play ball in the meet and greet with me and Kat, he drank a bunch of water and then knocked over what was left in the bowl and bounced around in the puddle he made. He ate 40,000 treats and sat for each one. He stood by the gate and wanted to go back to his kennel to relax. When we got back to his kennel, he drank more water and then threw himself on his bed for a nap. If this is his last day, it was a good one! :)

I helped a tech give Bailey, one of my other favorite dogs, ear drops for her bad ears. It was the first time I ever saw her pissy and bare her teeth! I scolded her for that!

I took pictures of a dog that had a horrible wound on his leg. The tech said it was either a break (waiting on x-rays) or a rattlesnake bite but either way, he may not survive. I didn't think he should die without a name, so Kat named him "Sunshine". We didn't even know he was a he until he stood up.

And he is being treated for his pain. No panic, please. We have a GREAT NEW VET that has taken wonderful care of ALL these animals!

I pulled Taco out from underneath his bed, where he has been hiding since his kennel mate, Jack, was adopted yesterday. We thought he needed a break so we took him outside. I've walked him before. He's on my Flickr page and he's the only chihuahua that I've ever walked from the shelter that knows how to sit for a treat.
Anyway, he was so nervous in the kennels. When we took him outside, his body language began to change. As a breeze would come up, he would close his eyes, put his nose up and just take it all in. He seemed so happy and content and I loved to watch him be at peace for just a few moments.
A new dog came in and Michelle took him into the office where Kat found him. She had tied him to her chair. Michelle weighs like 50 pounds so anytime the dog moved, he would drag her around with him. He is beautiful!! He has one blue eye and one brown eye.

And then, Matt helped me and Kat take pictures of puppies with ringworm because someone in internet land wanted to know if the dogs were part whippet. Kat and I went into a room we've never been in before.

Kat and I found paperwork on top of a freezer with a picture of a dead skunk on it. I guess there was a skunk in the freezer.

By the time we left, I had washed off dog blood, dog poop, dog food and dog slobber from somewhere off my body.

It was a GREAT day!

Hope yours was just as exciting.

Love,

Heather
